What to do when You get a Flat Tire

It happens to the best of us, you’re driving around the Virginia Beach, VA area either getting home from work or running a few errands and you hear that loud banging sound that’s immediately accompanied by an uneven feeling. You have a flat tire.

As your Virginia Beach Nissan dealership, we want to help you fix this issue should it happen to you. So, we’re breaking down the tire changing process step by step.

The first thing you need to do when you get a flat is to get to a safe spot, preferably on flat ground. We recommend pulling over to the shoulder or down a side street.

Once you find a safe spot, you’ll want to put your car in Park, engage your emergency brake, and turn on your hazard lights. Now it’s time to get down to business. Locate your spare tire, jack, and tire iron.

Depending on what kind of car you drive your spare tire may be in several locations. However, typically, you’ll find it underneath the floor mat in your trunk. If you have a tire pressure gauge handy, it’s a good idea to check your spare tire’s air pressure.

Now that you’ve removed your spare tire from your car, it’s time to begin removing the flat tire. Using your tire iron, loosen the wheel lugs in a counterclockwise motion; however, don’t remove your tire just yet.

Before you remove the flat tire, jack up the car and then finish removing the flat tire. Now, you’ll want to replace the flat with your spare. Line up the spare over the wheel studs and ensure it sits flat with the brake hub. Tighten the wheel lugs with your hands until you can’t anymore. Then, lower the jack and finish tightening the spare with your tire iron.

Finally, it’s essential that you visit our Virginia Beach Nissan dealership as quickly as possible so that you can replace your spare with a new tire. Our Nissan service center is here to help you get safely back on the road promptly.
